Belts and Hoses

What are Belts and Hoses?

The belts and hoses in a car are crucial parts of its engine and cooling systems.

Belts

These components are usually made with rubber or composite materials that transmit power from one engine part to another. The most notable parts include:

  1. Serpentine Belt: It is a single belt, also known as the drive belt, that provides power to multiple components, including the power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, cooling fan, air injection pump, and alternator.
  2. Timing Belt: This component is located outside of the engine and synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft. It is alternatively called the timing chain.

Hoses

These are hollow tubes made of rubber and other durable materials that transport fluids to the engine and cooling system. This includes radiator, heater, fuel, power steering, vacuum, and air intake hoses.

Like any other component, hoses and belts are subject to wear and tear over time. When these break down, the engine may be subject to overheating or a decrease in driving performance.

How Often Do Belts and Hoses Get Replaced?

These components are recommended to be replaced every 60,000 miles, or every four years. They should be changed right away when there are visible signs of wear and tear.
