What is a Timing Belt?

A timing belt is an important component of a car's internal combustion engine that helps to synchronize the movements of the crankshaft and camshaft. This belt is aptly named "timing" belt since its major role is to carefully regulate the timing of the engine's valves, ensuring they open and close at the proper moments during each phase of the engine's four-stroke cycle (specifically, intake, compression, power, and exhaust).

1. Synchronization

   The timing belt is in charge of ensuring that the crankshaft and camshaft work in tandem. This coordination is required to ensure that the engine's intake and exhaust valves function with precise timing relative to the piston positions.

2. Prevention of Contact

   The belt keeps the camshaft and crankshaft at the same distance and timing. Without this perfect timing, the engine's valves and pistons could collide, resulting in severe and costly engine damage.
