The Ford Taurus, a mid-size full-size sedan, has had a major impact on the American car industry. When it was first introduced in 1986, it quickly rose to the top of Ford's sales charts and significantly influenced the development of new standards in the areas of technology, safety, and design. The Taurus was designed to replace the Ford LTD and was sold together with the Mercury Sable. The vehicle was created with a jelly bean-shaped design and came in sedan and wagon body configurations. In 1989, the brand also unveiled the Super High Output (SHO) version, a high-performance model with a 3.0-liter V6 engine manufactured by Yamaha.
The design of the second-generation Taurus evolved with redesigned front and back fascias and cleaner lines. The third generation adopted a controversial oval-themed design, introducing more advanced features like optional side airbags and an enhanced suspension system. The fourth generation reverted to conservative styling, emphasizing passenger comfort and safety. The fifth generation rebranded the Taurus as the Ford Five Hundred, offering a more upscale and refined vehicle with enhanced interior space and advanced safety features. The Taurus made the switch to a full-size sedan with the sixth generation, which provided more interior room and a better standard of luxury.
