The Mercury Cougar referred to a range of vehicles manufactured from 1967 to 2002 by Ford's Mercury division. The first-generation Cougar was built on the same basis as the Ford Mustang but had a longer wheelbase, more opulent interior, and unique design. The Cougar's size increased during the second generation, in line with the early 1970s American auto industry trend. The third generation entered the luxury coupe market and faced off against vehicles like the Pontiac Grand Prix and Chevrolet Monte Carlo. It was bigger and more opulent than earlier models, and it shared the same platform as the Ford Torino.
The fourth and fifth generations of the Cougar strayed further away from their muscle car roots as they grew larger. This generation shared the same platform as the Ford Thunderbird, Lincoln Continental, and other premium Ford vehicles. Its beginnings as a sleek coupe with aerodynamic design components and an emphasis on luxury were restored in the sixth and seventh generations. The eighth generation was a significant departure from its predecessors since it was marketed as a small front-wheel-drive sports coupe targeted at a younger demographic. Despite its modern look and sporting intent, the final Cougar struggled to find its marketplace and was terminated in 2002, ending the Cougar marque after 35 years.
