The Mercury Grand Marquis was a full-size luxury sedan produced by Ford Motor Company from 1975 to 2011. It was renowned for having a roomy cabin, a comfortable ride, and a conventional body-on-frame design. The car evolved into its own model line in 1983 and was built on the Panther platform, which it shared with the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car. There were three generations of the Grand Marquis. The first generation prioritized comfort and luxury with its boxy form, huge V8 engine, and rear-wheel drive system. The second generation featured safety features such as standard airbags. The third generation arrived in 1998 with minor styling tweaks and significant technology and safety improvements. The final generation offered increased comfort features such as heated seats and automatic climate control.
The Grand Marquis's extended wheelbase and soft suspension system are responsible for its smooth and comfortable ride. By the early 2000s, the Grand Marquis stood as one of the last remaining full-size, body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive sedans, a class that had largely disappeared in favor of unibody construction and front-wheel drive. The production of this vehicle ended in 2011 as Ford completely phased out the Mercury brand. Notable models and special editions include the Grand Marquis LS, the Handling and Performance Package (HPP), and the Palm each Edition.
